Dectomax Injectable is approved for the treatment and control of internal and external parasites of cattle. It is safe for use in beef cattle, including pregnant cows, newborn calves and bulls. Equivac 2in1 is used in the prevention of tetanus due to Clostridium tetani and in the control of strangles due to Streptococcus equi subspecies equi in horses
Equivac 2in1 is one of a range of Equivac products available for tetanus and strangles treatment and control

ADVANTAGES
Equivac 2in1 provides a more practical and economical means of vaccinating simultaneously for both tetanus and strangles than purchasing and administering two separate vaccines
Prevention of tetanus: A single dose of Equivac 2in1 given to an unimmunised horse at the time of wounding or surgery may not prevent tetanus. For short-term prevention of tetanus, Equivac® TAT should also be used. See entry for Equivac TAT
Combined Active-Passive Protection: Equivac 2in1 can be administered simultaneously with Equivac TAT. A separate needle and syringe should be used for each product and administration should be on opposite sides of the body. If initiating a primary course the second dose of Equivac 2in1 should be administered 4 to 6 weeks later
Zoetis offers a guarantee against tetanus infection if horses are vaccinated by veterinarians with Equivac 2in1 in accordance with the guidelines of the Equine Infectious Diseases Advisory Board and the dose is registered with the Hendra Registry

Clinical Use

1 mL injected intra-muscularly. • For primary immunisation of horses against strangles, horses 3 months of age or older should be given 3 doses of vaccine at intervals no less than 2 weeks apart. For ongoing immunisation, booster doses should be given annually, or every 6 months for horses at higher risk of exposure. Equivac® S may be used for strangles vaccination where tetanus inclusion is not warranted

Side Effects

Allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis occur rarely with biological products and may require appropriate treatment. Transient soft tissue swelling associated with the site of injection of this product has been reported on rare occasions.

DOSAGE
A booster dose given 12 months after the two basic doses of vaccine should confer lifelong immunity against blackleg and tetanus. However, further annual boosters are required to maintain immunity against black disease and malignant oedema.

More regular doses may be required to maintain immunity against enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney). These are best given prior to seasonal challenge and advice from your local veterinarian is recommended.

Annual booster doses should be given around four weeks before calving or lambing to ensure that passive immunity is passed onto the new-born calf or lamb via the colostrum (first milk).

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE
Ultravac 7in1 is used for the routine immunisation of cattle for the prevention of:

enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney disease),
tetanus,
black disease,
malignant oedema (blackleg-like disease), including swelled head in rams,
blackleg in cattle and sheep and
leptospirosis (L. Hardjo and L. Pomona).
For the prevention of urinary shedding of the named leptospires in cattle when used prior to natural exposure and to prevent the risk of human leptospiral infection associated with the shedding of the named leptospires in the urine and from the reproductive tract of cattle.

For the prevention of reproductive tract colonisation and placental and foetal infection with L. Hardjo.

A single annual dose is all that is required to provide on-going annual protection, without the need for six-monthly booster doses. Note that additional doses of Ultravac 5in1 may be required to maintain immunity to enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney). These are given prior to seasonal challenge and advice from your local veterinarian is recommended.

Sterilise all injection equipment by boiling in water for 10 minutes before use.
Avoid use of strong disinfectants.
Maintain cleanliness at all times during vaccination. Great care must be taken to avoid contamination of the vaccine, needle and internal parts of the syringe by contact with unsterile surfaces or unwashed hands.
Keep needles sharp and clean. Replace frequently.
Use the shortest possible needle, not exceeding 15 mm in length.
As far as possible avoid injection of the animals during wet weather or under dusty conditions.
This product must be injected only under the skin (subcutaneously).
Inject high on the neck behind the ear, i.e. under the skin on the side of the neck (just behind and below the base of the ear). Do not inject at any other site.
